On
a visit to Romania in 1996, I met a boy who lived on the streets. He was an agile,
intelligent and witty kid who loved to make you laugh. When I gave him a bottle of
shampoo, he only washed one side of his head in order to show how dirty the other side
was. All his energies were spent in making the most of every second of every day and most
importantly, in sharing this joy for life with others. It occurred to me that everything
in his nature made up the essential ingredients for theatre; beauty, humility, wit,
duality, intelligence and sorrow.
